Whether you choose to immerse yourself in the cowboy heritage of Cheyenne or prefer to take in the quaint sights of Laramie, Wyoming has much to offer. Here, we’ll explore how you can become a pharmacy technician in Wyoming, and what you need to know about your employment outlook if you decide to make a move into this exciting career field.

Wyoming Pharmacy Technician Certification Requirements

If you’re thinking about becoming a pharmacy technician, it’s likely that you already enjoy many of the customer service aspects of the job. Pharmacy technicians work with both pharmacists and patients, helping people who need medication for acute or chronic conditions get the help they need quickly. As a pharmacy technician, it’s essential that you pay close attention to detail, can work with discretion, and are ready to take on the challenge of staying up to date with changes in the pharmaceutical industry.

To become a licensed pharmacy technician in Wyoming, you must:

  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Earn certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and/or the National Healthcareer Association (ExCPT)

Let’s explore the difference between these two certifications.

21 states across the U.S. now require pharmacy technicians to earn PTCB certification, meaning it’s likely that you’ll be able to find a job as a pharmacy tech if you decide to move to another state. The test to earn PTCB certification is 90 questions, and applicants have two hours to complete the exam. There are nine knowledge domains on the PTCB, including:

  • Medication safety
  • Sterile and non-sterile compounding
  • Pharmacy quality assurance
  • Pharmacy law and regulations
  • Pharmacy inventory management
  • Medication order entry and fill process
  • Pharmacy billing and reimbursement
  • Pharmacy information systems and usage application

Students who are PTCB certified are ready to take on a full-time role in a pharmacy and are often seen as ready to move on to supervisory positions after they gain some work experience.

The ExCPT exam has not been around as long as the PTCB exam, but the ExCPT exam is now recognized by most states. This exam is similar to the PTCB and allows employers to rest assured that their pharmacy technicians are fully prepared to get the job done right. There are 110 questions on the ExCPT, and test-takers have two hours to complete the exam. There are four knowledge domains on the ExCPT, including:

  • Overview and laws
  • Drugs and drug therapy
  • Dispensing process
  • Medication therapy and quality assurance

Students who earn their ExCPT certification are ready to move forward with a career as a pharmacy technician and can move into leadership or supervisory roles after gaining work experience.
