Pharmacy technicians fill prescriptions, handle customer service, and collect information from physicians ordering medication for their patients. Those who wish to become a pharmacy technician in Delaware may want to become more familiar with the job outlook and state requirements for this role.

Delaware Pharmacy Technician Certification Requirements

Delaware does not regulate pharmacy technicians. However, completing a pharmacy technician program and becoming certified are highly recommended for those who want to expand their employment options and earn the highest salaries. Those who choose to become certified can do so by passing a certification exam approved by the State Board of Pharmacy in Delaware.

Approved certification exams include the following:

  • PTCB (PTCE)
  • ICPT (ExCPT)

Additional requirements for certification include the following:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Complete a training program within 90 days
  • Directed by a pharmacist, training must include 10 hours of teaching that include ethical and moral considerations
  • Documentation of completed training - these documents should be available for inspection at all times
  • Proof of passing the PTCB exam or another exam approved by Delaware’s State Board of Pharmacy
  • Pharmacy techs do not have continuing education requirements

Although certification is not required to become a pharmacy tech, certain duties do require certification and training. Those who wish to reconstitute oral solutions, collect prescription data from medical professionals, and conduct substantial tasks in the field may wish to get a certification.

Pharmacy techs cannot perform the same tasks as certified technicians if they do not have the proper training designated by the State Board of pharmacy. The board also can approve on-the-job training as a National Pharmacy Technician Training Program. A licensed pharmacist takes responsibility for the actions of a pharmacy technician working under their supervision.
