Last Updated/Verified: Feb 12, 2024

Becoming a pharmacy technician in Maryland is straightforward, following guidelines found in many other states across the country, most of which Federal law determines. However, there are variations and areas where each state in the union is permitted the flexibility to set additional requirements. This guide will help you understand what you need to do in Maryland to work as a pharmacy technician.

Maryland Pharmacy Technician Certification Requirements

Maryland requires the following from those seeking certification to work as pharmacy technicians throughout the state:

  • Applicants 17 years old or over may apply for this certification
  • If you already have national certification, you must provide proof along with your application
  • Maryland recognizes both PTCB and ICPT
  • If you do not have national certification, the pharmacist at your intended place of work must provide evidence of at least 6 months of experience from you
  • Also, those without national certification must provide proof of a state pharmacy approved training program
  • You are required to submit details for a criminal background check along with supporting court documents. If your criminal records show convictions related to controlled substances, your application may be refused
  • Applicant must hold a High School Diploma or GED and provide evidence such as transcripts
  • Students yet to complete their formal studies are welcome to apply and must show academic records in good standing
  • Application to certify as a pharmacy technician in Maryland is $45; annual renewal fee is also $45

Special note 1: The Maryland Board of Pharmacy carries out the criminal record check once all information is satisfactorily submitted

Special note 2: Transfers from other states are allowed so long as the state has similar requirements. This will be checked on submission. You will also need a letter of good standing from the other state's board

Special note 3: Interns are not required to follow these steps

Maryland Pharmacy Technician Careers & Employment Outlook

A Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report released in 2019 showed Maryland had some 7,640 practicing pharmacy technicians. Average pay was calculated at $16.04 per hour median, a $17.00 per hour mean, and $35,500 annually.

Pharmacy technicians typically work in pharmacies and drug stores; BLS data highlighted that this area employs 51% of this professional. The next biggest employer was clinical settings with around 17%. This includes hospitals, clinics, and other direct medical facilities. 9% of pharmacy technicians work in other retail outlets such as grocery stores.

Most Maryland pharmacies work 24/7/365. Therefore, pharmacy technicians can expect unsociable hours including weekends and night shifts. There are exceptions to round the clock operating hours where the pharmacy operates inside a secondary facility such as a grocery store.

According to the BLS, pharmacy technicians can expect a 4% demand increase in the decade between 2019 and 2029. This is the current job average across the U.S.
